Hello all,
Shameless plug here for my org, Music for America. We're running our first ever fundraiser. We're trying to raise $15,000 to help finance 15 concerts in the swing states this fall.
Donate!
For those of you who've done your homework, you know we're a 527 that exists on the big-money private funding tip. You might ask yourself why we're hitting up kids online for $25. Here's the honest truth:
- We want to be independent. While our main benefactor is really a cool guy and I like him a lot both as a person and a partner, I'd like it even better if we didn't have to rely on him. I'd like nothing more than to have the people we're trying to mobilize -- people like the Kos community and my peers -- be the primary source of our funding.
- We're hoping to establish patterns. We're hoping that by getting kids who aren't super-political excited about politics and used to donating a little scratch for the cause, that they'll take a greater interest and grow up to be real political players. I know I turned some kind of corner the first time I gave to the Dean campaign. I'm hoping to bring the same experience to more people in my generation.
- We want to build a movement. Similar to point 1 above, we can't be assured of having a lasting presence if we're dependent on the generosity of a few people. Learning how to gather financial support from our peers is essential to the long-term survival of our organization. We want to give the left back it's Teen Spirit (in the words of Danny Goldberg). To do that, we'll need to be more than an election-year flash in the pan.
You can help our
first ever fundraiser by
kicking us the cost of a couple CDs right now. If you want to be super-cool, send this link to some other people:
