Rauschenberger's announcement came just hours after U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the state's leading Republican, told the Associated Press he considered the state senator "the best person'' to take over for Ryan as the party nominee. The two had been in discussions in recent days about a potential U.S. Senate bid.

Asked by the AP this afternoon who he would back with Rauschenberger out, Hastert said, "You know what, I'm back to square one. I don't know."
This is all getting quite embarrassing for our friends across the aisle. Perhaps they should just let Ryan back in -- not being able to find a candidate is turning out to be far more scandalous for the GOP than a few sex clubs. 'Course they'll never admit that...
