Another potential contender to Obama drops out

Rauschenberger is now the latest to bow out. They can't get anyone to go up against Obama -- not even one of the guys who lost to Ryan in the GOP primary. Rauschenberger wanted the job in March; now he has no intention of being a sacrificial lamb.

This drop out is especially sweet because it comes within hours of Hastert telling the media that Rauschenberger was "the best person to take over for Ryan."

State Sen. Steve Rauschenberger took himself out of the running today to replace Jack Ryan as the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, sending the GOP scrambling once again for a candidate to challenge Democrat Barack Obama.

Rauschenberger's announcement came just hours after U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the state's leading Republican, told the Associated Press he considered the state senator "the best person'' to take over for Ryan as the party nominee. The two had been in discussions in recent days about a potential U.S. Senate bid.

Asked by the AP this afternoon who he would back with Rauschenberger out, Hastert said, "You know what, I'm back to square one. I don't know."

This is all getting quite embarrassing for our friends across the aisle. Perhaps they should just let Ryan back in -- not being able to find a candidate is turning out to be far more scandalous for the GOP than a few sex clubs. 'Course they'll never admit that...
