Here's the deal:
As you all know by now, Michael Scanlon, who used to be one of Tom DeLay's key staffers, is turning state's evidence right now in order to save himself from the hoosegow.
And one of the people he's sold to the Feds is none other than Senator Bob Ney (R-Ohio). Mike DeWine may be going down next year, but Ney's going to leave office before DeWine does.
Let's let Josh Marshall take it from here:
The first thing to note is the political and legal fate of Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH). A few days ago a fellow blogger sent me a post in which he incorrectly stated that Ney was not running for reelection. I pointed out the error -- he'd confused him with retiring Ohio Rep. Mike Oxley (R). But I told him not to feel bad since he was right. Ney is retiring too; he just doesn't know it yet.
Which brings us back to Scanlon's plea. In their charge against Scanlon, federal prosecutors assert that Scanlon and Abramoff offered and Ney accepted numerous bribes for various official acts. (He's referenced as 'Legislator #1'; but it's Ney.) By pleading guilty, Scanlon of course agrees that that is true. And he will testify to that effect.
See? There will soon be enough Ohio Senate seats to go around. No need to push or shove! :-)
[UPDATE: Eeep! Ney's a Congresscritter, not a Senator! Voinovich is the other GOP Senator. I should have remembered this -- as Voinovich was the guy who actually stuck his neck out by BEGGING his fellow GOP Senators to reject Bolton!
Of course, Voinovich could get caught in the Abramoff net. But I'd actually feel kinda bad about Voinovich getting nailed, as he did try to spare America the nightmare of John Bolton in the UN.]
