This is what I hope I can say a year and a half from now, what I hope I can tell my friends when they ask why they should vote for Democrats in 2006 (hopefully it will be true, the Dems have a little time to make it so):
- Because Democrats want to keep Social Security safely away from Wall St. and away from the sometimes harmful influences of economic cycles.
- Because Democrats will work to guarantee the United States never ever defaults on any debt obligations that are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government, including the Government Bonds held in the Social Security Trust Fund.
- Because Democrats believe the ingenuity of the American people can find a solution to the problem of energy shortages that does not only mean allowing oil companies to drill wherever they want.
- Because Democrats want to fund mass transportation systems like Amtrak during times of rising gasoline prices.
- Because Democrats value the natural environment we all share and use and want to do all they can to keep the earth sustainable and safe for our children and grandchildren in the future.
- Because Democrats want the United States to join the rest of the civilized world by making basic health care available to all citizens.
- Because Democrats believe that every child in America has an equal right to obtain a quality education.
- Because Democrats believe the government should not be allowed to mortgage our future to foreign banks in order to provide tax cuts for the wealthiest 1%.
- Because Democrats believe politicians are beholden to the citizens they represent and not to the corporations who corruptly attempt to buy their influence (Please, please Democrats, introduce a bill to curb the influence of lobbyists in Washington, it will guarantee you votes).
- Because Democrats believe this country was founded with a basic principle of Separation of Powers and that an independent judiciary is a vastly important piece of that principle.
- Because Democrats believe the defense of this country is a serious responsibility that should not be influenced by ideological theories, but instead by concrete intelligence.
