I guess it first hit me when I was watching the segment on the "humanitarian" award that the country awards we giving out last night..the woman who was giving this award said that it makes sense to give it b/c "... all country singers do humanitarian work" or something of the sort. Really? I didnt realize that country music and the red cross were pretty much the same organization. Now, don't get me wrong..its good..no, its great for artists to get involved with the community, but the country "academy" as it calls itself, is so determined to pretend that it has the moral highground, sorta like the way that people think of when hollywood actors talk about environmentalism. Its not the case that you are ALL about helping out, mr. and mrs. country music. you're not that nice. you're not that helpful, but you sure think you are.
Its common southern elitism--"We care more about others than you do..." really? Is that why you need so many guns?
And then the other issues. you couldnt be a man and go to a country event w/out the country hat. b/c its part of the wardrobe, like gold cuff links are to "northern" elites...you better dress right, you need to get the sensibilities correct..and if you don't we're offended.
We're offended if you don't like our gun culture or hunting culture, if you don't like our attitude towards "family" values or our love of big cars mcdonalds or walmart. Now, in my liberal mind you can hunt go to walmart or mcdonalds and thats totally cool, but if you decide you're somehow better than I am b/c i cook or go to costco, you're an elitist. YES you can be a walmart elitist. Simply b/c you think your way is better b/c its your way ...thats bullshi-
Thats the case of the south. its all pretense. its all getting details right or being sorry. Remember bush's swearing in ceremonies and the "cowboy boot ball" or something like that? It was the perfect symbol. Of course fancy ballrooms are elitist...and when you need just the right cowboy hats/boots it doesnt make the ballroom less elitist..in fact, if the reason to include the "cowboy" mentality is to exclude people who dont know what that is, then a "cowboy boot ball" in a fancy ass ballroom is even more elitist than the normal elite kind.
I dont know if I'm making my case here. But I'm tired of the constant attempt not to offend the southern sensibilities and at the same time not call such sensibilities what they are--elitism.
We're not all alike. That doesnt make me better than you or you better than me. Get off your high horse..pun intended.
