Even as the allegations against him crumple like toilet paper in a rainstorm, we progressives are told that we must stay away from George Galloway because of his association with Fawaz Zureikat, who BushCo has been broadly hinting did some bad things.

Well, he's apparently not bad enough to keep Donald Rumsfeld from doing business with him, even today.

The Jordanian businessman at the centre of claims that George Galloway secretly bought oil from Saddam Hussein has a major contract to sell US military technology in Iraq, The Independent on Sunday can reveal.

Note that this article dates from last week. Note that, if you're a resident of the US, this is likely the first time you're hearing about it -- but that you've likely seen the old film loop of Galloway shaking Saddam's hand (film taken during a visit to promote Galloway's charity work in Iraq) at least twice on network and/or cable/satellite TV in the last three weeks.

What does that tell you about the US media?

(By the way, Attaturk last week over at Eschaton found a similar article detailing Zureikat's being allowed by the US to do business in post-Saddam Iraq as well as in America.)

Sometimes, where there's smoke, there's fire. But many times -- as was the case with the bogus "Clinton scandals" -- the smoke was pouring out of a well-oiled, well-financed smoke machine and the otherwise-well-meaning people who got caught in its fumes.
