well, at least Sen. John Kerry isn't saying, "he's not fillibuster-able," before the hearings even begin, hurray:
from a new AP story:
"Democratic Sen. John Kerry urged the White House on Friday to release "in their entirety" all documents and memos from Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' tenure in two Republican administrations.
"We cannot do our duty if either Judge Roberts or the Bush administration hides elements of his professional record," said the Massachusetts senator who was his party's presidential candidate last year."
"Democratic officials" in the story specifically mention Roberts' documents at the Reagan Library:
Democratic officials also said Friday they want access to all material regarding Roberts at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. Roberts served in the White House counsel's office from 1982-1986. He was principal deputy solicitor general in the administration of President George H.W. Bush.
Kossak poster LestatDelc posted a diary here this week including information about Roberts' folders at the Reagan Library, but it got lost in the confusion re: how the "John Roberts" cited in the Walsh Iran-Contra report actually was likely to be John B. Roberts, a senior aide in the Reagan White House political office, not John G. Roberts, the nominee, who was an associate counsel in the Reagan White House legal office during the time period in question.
LestatDelc's diary has a list of titles he found of folders with Roberts' documents at the Reagan Library, including several with "Nicaragua" in the title.
The AP story also has "Democratic officials" as "eager to learn details of Roberts' activities in Florida in 2000, at the time of the state's contested presidential recount." Those here who think nobody cares anymore about what happened in Florida in 2000 should check out this Miami Herald front-page story, which was the lead story on yesterday's front page.
Seems to me there's no reason to accept any kind of a hurried confirmation process. Sandra Day O'Connor is sitting, and she said she'll sit until the new justice is confirmed. Bush has said he wants Roberts in by October -- the same month the Fitzgerald grand jury is done with its term -- the same month we might expect indictments? Nobody knows.
