The Dolchstoß myth -- or the "stab in the back" myth -- is the favorite excuse of reality-challenged fascists everywhere. Most recently used to "explain" America's defeat in Vietnam, it got its start in Germany in the aftermath of World War One. Hitler rode the myth to power, which led to World War Two.
