It is time for some new rules, Bill Maher style.
- You are not a racist unless you think all people of a ethnic group are inferior to you, simply because they are a member of that ethnic group.
- You are not prejudiced unless you immediately prejudge someone as having a characteristic that is (mistakenly or not) shared by people having the same ethnic, religious or social class background.
Now, Armando today discussed what he thought was a underlying racism of certain Democrats who opposed Dinkins or Ferrer in New York City. I am not from New York, so I will not speak to that.
I am from Philadelphia. And here we have a pretty corrupt and incompetent mayor in John F. Street. Now, he is an African American. If he ran for a third term (thankfully he is prohibited from doing so), I would not vote for him if he was the Democratic nominee. I would vote Republican. Yes, he is that bad. Now, some would say I am racist. Some would say I am prejudiced.
If I am prejudiced, I am prejudiced against incompetence and corruption.
We have others who say that all whites are racists. That is a racist comment in and of itself. How ironic. But that comment also assumes that ONLY whites are racists. Indeed, the assumption out there is that you can only be a racist if you are racist against African Americans or minorities. Wrong. I have met more racists among African Americans and Hispanics in my life than I have met among white people. Yes, minorities can be just as racist.
So I think we need to all calm down here. In the topic of race, there are no absolutes. Are some white people racist? Sure. Are some Democrats voting Republican just because the Democrat is a minority? Maybe, although I have not seen it.
Are all white people racists? No, for I am not one. Are minorities racists? Sure, some are.
