Because Warner has a big tent philosophy, Warner will move the overall political center to the left. He will make progressive appointments to every department in the federal government. He will appoint progressive justices to the Supreme Court.
But if Feingold wins the nomination, then I'll still work my ass off in 2008. I love Feingold. He's clear, concise and direct. Unlike Dean, Feingold doesn't scream or seem angry. Unlike Kerry, Feingold comes across as a regular guy. No doubt, Feingold would make a great president. Maybe the greatest since FDR. But since this is the reality-based community, we must ask ourselves if Feingold has a real shot at expanding the Dem tent.
I do believe that the most important thing in 2008 is victory. Warner can flip Virginia, and he might flip Tennessee and Arkansas. Thus, Warner's path to the White House seems easier than Feingold's. I don't enjoy making things harder than they have to be. Feingold would have to pray for the triple-bank shot of FL, OH and PA. He could do it...but it may be the toughest political battle in history. On the other hand, Warner will be more digestible for swing voters in red states. In politics, winning is everything. 2nd place gets nothing accomplished. I refuse to be a Dem martyr who would rather be right than win.
One thing that needs to stop: Comparing Warner with Lieberman. Lieberman attacks his fellow Dems. Warner supports his fellow Dems. Lieberman hails from a solid blue state. Warner hails from a red state, and will try to flip red states into the blue column in 2008.
Whether it's Feingold or Warner, I can't wait for 2008. We have to win back the White House. If we don't, our children will never forgive us.
