George, don't you get it? Your political strategy of scaring America with the terroist threat, is what the terrorists want. Terrorists want us to fear. STOP SCARING AMERICA!
George Bush's legacy will be, "He made Americans fear." The Bush Administration has proved more capable of instilling fear than anticipating terrorist threats. For months after 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) changed our color coded threat index every time Bush's approval rating dipped. A change from yellow to orange kept people awake at night and made them suspect their neighbors. Bush does not understand that terrorists succeed only if they instill terror. America must never become the land of the fearful, or the terrorists win without firing another shot.
A real leader instills courage and empowers citizens to greatness. George Bush instills fear and trepidation because he obsesses with thwarting methods used in previous attacks, and fails to prepare for evolving threats.
I suggest a concrete approach to eliminating fear in America: 1) background security checks on all airport and airline employees, 2) banning unscreened cargo on passenger planes, 3) barring from our ports all cargo containers that have not passed point of origin screening, 4) creating real risk management strategizing teams at DHS whose mission is to anticipate future risks rather than focus only on past threats, and 5) retaining experienced DHS employees to work on terrorist monitoring and strategy. We must eliminate fear mongering, and put in place a real plan for National Security. When we do so, Americans again will fear only fear itself.
