I was flying with a group of about 30 people in July of 2003. We had just spent two weeks in Alaska, a wonderful trip, and were at the Anchorage Airport for our connection flight to Salt Lake City. It wasn't a large airport and it was about midnight (although it was still light outside) but there was still a healthy number of people. Everyone in our group had gotten through security with no problems and we were waiting for our flight.
Suddenly, out of the terminal came a giant of a man; he had to bend down to get through the doorway. He, along with some of the men around him, were professional wrestlers in the WWF or whatever they call it now. To me this was not a big deal but there were some wrestling fans in the group and they jumped at the opportunity to get an autograph. I'm sure they were all tired from the long flight and I didn't blame them that they ignored the calls for autographs. One boy, who I'll call "Shane", was so desperate that he followed them back out through the security gate.
After getting an autograph, Shane had to go back through security. This time around they found a knife that he had bought in his carry-on. How bad is the security when they can't find a knife in a carry-on, especially since it was hyped up after Sept. 11th and then the start of the War in Iraq. I know it was a smaller airport but that doesn't mean that someone couldn't hijack a plane from there.
Luckily for Shane they let him on the flight (just in time) after one of the adults on the trip spoke to the people in charge, whoever that might be.
This story itself isn't much, but it does make me more wary to fly. Who's to say that that couldn't happen again. We go through all these security measures and they can't even detect a knife? Sad.
