It was Stanton who got the Kennedy-Nixon debate televised and Stanton who let CBS go commercial-free for four days after Kennedy was assassinated.
It was Stanton who controlled CBS during the first "CBS Reports" series and who was subpoenaed for the episode dealing with the Pentagon promoting the cause for the Vietnam War. He was almost jailed for refusing to give the House Commerce Committee the film from the program.
He did a lot of things that I don't agree with as well, but he was a staunch supporter of First Amendment rights of TV journalists which is something everyone can admire.
He died on December 24 in Boston at the age of 98.
