Born in Somalia, having spent most of her life in Kenia, she became known as an MP for the Rightist VVD party for her attacks on Islam, her advocacy of no more aid for Africa, and of the Iraq war.
Media spin describing Ms 'Ali' as a bona fide secularist and/or feminist had been doubted before, as she had been associated with Theo van Gogh who sharply opposed feminism, condoning men beating up women, as long as those men were not Muslims.
