This September, Chris Mooney will be on tour talking about his revised and updated, paper-back edition of
The Republican War on Science. The speaking
schedule is here. And I can tell you, after watching him at Ykos, if you can make one of the events and if you care about the integrity of science, you don't want to miss it. There is no cost to attend, it's geared for all audiences, and it's the best such presentation I've ever seen.
There is imo, no book that can both keep the reader so engaged while getting them up to speed on the most recent, ongoing GOP efforts to misuse and abuse science, like this one: The Republican War on Science is the current gold-standard. Chris emailed me this illuminating missive describing his experiences speaking about the hardcover last year, and why he took his current approach to the paperback:
Link--Even as I went on tour and spoke to large crowds deeply worried about political attacks on science, my own family had fled New Orleans and my mother's home in the city's Lakeview neighborhood had been destroyed by ten feet of floodwater. It was a very difficult time, and yet also a crucial one for speaking out about the importance of good scientific information to public policy.
I wish I could say that since then, the situation I denounced had at least slightly improved. Yet if anything, I fear it may have grown worse. The attacks on science, and their sponsorship by Republican politicians, continue apace, with the Bush administration leading the way but key members of Congress following close behind. These politicians, in turn, appear driven by a continual need to appease key sectors of the Republican base that have inconvenient slices of scientific information constantly in their sights.
I felt it important that the paperback edition of my book reflect these ongoing developments. So I went to work.
The highly affordable paperback can be pre-ordered here and will be available in a few days. Chris Mooney is a senior editor for Seed Magazine. He has appeared on numerous TV and radio programs and will be debating Intelligent Design Creationist Dr. Jonathan Wells on Fox Radio's Alan Colmes Show this coming Tuesday at 11:30 AM EDT. You can read more of his work at his blog, The Intersection.
