West Virginia seems to be a joke to many people. The demographics do show some evidence of a relatively large population in poverty, relatively undereducated, relatively elderly. It's neither North nor South. It is a place of astounding physical beauty because of our beautiful mountains and sparse population (We have fewer than 2 million people in the whole state), it is a geographically challenged place for transportation in and out. The state has a history of being raped for timber, coal, etc. Despite the jokes about West Virginia, this state has wonderful "human resources". The young people here and families just need better representation. We have 2 Democratic Senators but we need a Democrat representing us in the U.S. Congress.
I could list all the issues where Shelley Moore Capito has voted against our interests but I think you probably are aware of them. She is truly the classic rubber stamp for the Bush administration.
I am begging here for some help for Mike Callaghan. He is a great candidate in a predominantly Democratic district and deserves some help, whatever you can do. I'd like to see him chosen as a netroots candidate, some $5 donations to his actblue sites, or just some talking about him online to get people interested.
If you want to know anything about him, go to www.mikewv.com. He is good on all the issues we care about as Democrats. Whatever "progressive" means, Mike is a progressive Democrat. He grew up in Richwood, WV and knows and respects the culture and values of our state. Mike is intelligent and has the heart we want in our Democratic candidates. His family is active in dog rescue. Other than Democratic Party issues, animal welfare is my other important issue.
I've invited every National Democratic name I can think of to come to WV and help us fundraise for Mike. Mike is touring the district in a used RV every day and doing everything he can to campaign and talk to everyone.
If you want to talk to any of his campaign staff or email them, let me know, they are very open and friendly and I can put you in touch with them. If you have any advice for the campaign, again let me know and I'll put you in touch with them.
Lastly, if you want to come visit the 2nd District (14 counties and a wide geographic area), let me know, I'll give you a tour.
Every House race is important this year and even those that aren't being given much attention can be competitive. I am begging for some help for West Virginia because Mike winning this race will also help the Democrats take back the U.S. House of Representatives.
