I first noticed a change during the aftermath of the Virgina Tech shootings. So many diaries and posters on this site for and against guns. There were flame wars like I've never seen. One of the qualities of the Democratic Party which I always liked the most was our unabashed desire for sensible gun laws. But for a couple of weeks, it seemed to me that 50% of the commenters on Daily Kos were pro NRA supporters. Commenters were literally cussing each other out and calling each other names and saying "f**k you", etc, and TR's were flying back and forth.
Then the Cindy Sheehan controversy. Sheehan wants Bush impeached. And not to say she started the anti war movement all by herself or anything, but she certainly did more to garner attention to it than anyone else with her Camp Casey in Crawford protests. She was our hero on Daily Kos, until she called for the impeachment of George Bush. Oh yeah, she also said she might run against Nancy Pelosi. Then all of a sudden, she gets hammered for that statement by all the same people who supported Ned Lamont running against Joe Lieberman. (I know I know. Ned ran as a Democrat and Cindy said she'd run as an Independent). Okay, I get it. But still. The vitriol was at an all time high. And again, the same kind of "f**k you" comments showed up in droves along with the TR's.
Now Mike Stark protests Bill Orally and he gets hammered for protesting a "Liar Liar Pants on Fire" type of motherfucker the likes we've never seen. But, "...Oh we're better than that..." and "...yeah, but not on this web site..." Yada, Yada, Yada. And again the cussing, and the calling of names, and the TR's.
I want to ask a serious question. What the hell is going on? Is it just me? Or is anyone else on this site becoming confused.
Are we not Liberals? Is this not a Liberal Democratic web site? Are we not supposed to oppose George Bush here? And Bill Orally? And Faux News? And the NRA?
I believe as Democrats we should give each other the right to speak. If we disagree fine. But don't cuss each other out. Don't call each other names. That's not what being a Democrat is all about.
I offer this. We Democrats and Daily Kos will always be hated and feared by the republicans. It's folly to suggest that any diary on Daily Kos which has something negative to say about George Bush or Faux News or Bill Orally will ever be seen as "fair and balanced" by the other side. So best to get over it. Disagree if you must. But do it nicely. Please.
Peace. Love. Happiness.
