Two days ago, I posted questions concerning whether Gonzales responded to Senator's Leahy deadline, and the post went to the top of the recommend list. The great interest leads me to post this follow up to highlight the reply from Mary2002. She reports that Gonzales replied to Leahy with a letter that asserted there was information independent from the Canadian information that supported having Arar on the no-fly list.
Gonzales wants the information classified to keep it from the judiciary committee. Leahy said:
You know, whether you have good grounds for Arar to be on the no-fly list or not, or whether you had good grounds to want him interrogated or not - those aren't the real question. The real question is why did we violate our anti-torture treaties and laws by sending Arar to Syria for torture instead of to Canada?
Leahy set this week as another deadline for Gonzales to respond.
I want the information investigated and disclosed. I want to see what the Attorney General thinks is good enough information to kidnap and torture someone in a foreign country for 10 months. E-mail the members of the Judiciary committee and tell them we are watching.
