Ky Senate 08: Greg Stumbo Sounds Primed to Run

One of the most important tasks all Democrats need to dedicate themselves to in the 2008 elections is the disposal of the Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell. Not because he is the Senate's top Republican, but because he has been a constant opponent of true Progressive change in this country.

From opposing any kind of campaign finance reform or attempts to take the money out of politics, to supporting and cheerleading President Bush in vetoing healthcare for millions of our children, Mitch McConnell is constantly on the wrong side of every issue. His knee-jerk partisanship has been a constant thorn in the side to Republicans and Democrats alike who want to work together for common sense solutions.

Here in Kentucky, myself and thousands of activist Democrats are dedicated to ridding ourselves and this country of the disgraceful hypocrisy known as Mitch McConnell. Of course everyone knows you must have a candidate first. I have been telling you about Greg Stumbo, the current Attorney General who is considering a run for Mitch McConnell's Senate seat. To those of you who have read these diaries, you all know that I think Greg Stumbo is the candidate who has the right balance of experience, name recognition, accomplishments, and most of all fighting spirit, to unseat McConnell.

Now, many of you have actually taken action for me on this. From what I have been led to believe, many Kossacks have contacted Greg Stumbo's Exploratory Committee, and many have even generously invested in the defeat of Mitch McConnell by donating. You have my humble thanks. We will need help in defeating McConnell, and many of you have stepped up to the plate nicely.

I just wanted to take a few minutes tonight to not only thank everyone who has helped me with this, but to update you on the progress of the exploratory committee. Many have asked me when and if Attorney General Stumbo will run, and have expressed an interest in donating after he announces. Today I recieved an email from Greg Stumbo of a statement he was sending to the press. It is an update of the committee's efforts so far, and contains some good news:

Dear Friends and members of the press:

Today, is the end of the F.E.C. Filling Quarter and, although we do not file a report because we are still an exploratory committee, I didn't want the date to pass without giving you a full progress report. With so many great friends, we reached our exploratory committee goal!

Wow, those of you who told us that we had strong support were right! Each day, I find another group of people ready to join our efforts to take back our Country and pledge their support to our exploratory committee for US Senate.

I pledged to myself and my advisors that I would never again enter a race without talking first with my friends and supporters across Kentucky - not just the big contributors, but the people who are out in the trenches everyday making a real difference. I have yet to ask one person to support our exploratory committee who has not agreed, and for that reason, we reached our goal for the exploratory committee much faster than I thought possible.

While I have been focused on helping our Democratic ticket win this fall, I am so grateful that we have reached our goal. We are now focused on research and putting together some polling information. I will keep you informed of the progress. While I know Sen. McConnell might report 10 million dollars, it will take him 100 million to defend his dismal record.

It is clear people want a change in Washington.

So there you have. Despite the rumors last month that Stumbo would drop out, he definately sounds like someone who is anticipating a run.
