According to Wikipedia, AFSCME consists principally of local and state government employees and health care workers and is one of the largest and most progressive labor unions in the U.S. It is reportedly the single biggest contributor to U.S. political campaigns, having donated more than $38 million since 1990. It includes large number of women and minority workers and was a key component of the movement within labor that opposed U.S. intervention in Central American in the 1980s.
