HBO sent a car to the airport to pick me up prior to my appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher. Soon, the driver and I started chatting about how horrible Cheney was, how Blackwater could go screw themselves, how he once was a union member, how Bush lied to get us into Iraq, and so on.
Then he asked me, "What's your name, Greek?" I said, "yeah". While I sometimes add, "I'm half Salvadoran", this time, for whatever reason, I didn't.
Then the guy started off on the "beaners". Beaners? I didn't know anyone still used that stupid slur. To give the guy some credit, he had no problem with "legalizing the beaners that are already here", but he wanted to keep "new beaners" out.
This guy was as liberal as you could get, but immigration (i.e. "beaners") was a huge issue. That's what has Democrats all around the nation spooked, and what has led Rahm Emanuel to urge Democratic candidates to run Right on immigration.
Yet tonight, in Virginia, Republicans based a huge chunk of their campaign on the anti-immigrant message.
And they got crushed. Just like anti-immigrant Republican all around the country did in 2006.
Update: Teacherken and Andrew White, on the other hand, say immigration did help the GOP.
