Edwards has sunk a TON of time and money into Iowa. He has a decent chance of winning. And/But the trends are against him in almost every other state.
Yes, yes, I know: winning Iowa is the linchpin of his strategy. The traditional media (remember? the one that hates his haircut!) will declare that winning Iowa means he has "momentum" going into New Hampshire...and South Carolina.
South Carolina: you remember. The state south of that other state wherein he couldn't even carry his own county or his own state.
[Note: I couldn't verify whether or not he carried his home precinct.]
Yes, I know that polls show that he does better than any other Dem against all other Republicans.
Now that's irony: Edwards, the most progressive of all top tier Democrats, the one with the most loyal following, here at Daily Kos, wins the election by convincing independents and cross-over Republicans to vote for him. Sounds good on paper, but...I don't buy it.
[Note: never mind that he'd go to sleep every night knowing he gained the Oval from people who couldn't abide voting for a black and/or woman candidate.]
So here's another irony: that Edwards, who is the candidate most vulnerable to sniping from the media (among a field of Democratic candidates vulnerable to the hackneyed and juvenile pronouncements of Matthews & Russert) is the one candidate most relying on their support to help him get the nomination.
Does this seem a plausible scenario for gaining the nomination? It has to be, if he's going to reach out and scoop up all the chips off the table.
Never mind plausible. Never mind ironic. That would be incredible, as in "not credible." That would be fantastic, as in "fantasy."
It would be like him climbing up to the 10-meter board and doing a two-and-a-half-tuck gainer, followed by three rotations in jackknife position, then straightening out and cutting the water like a knife.
You better cross your fingers and bless his heart. And have a Plan B. Because I'm afraid he's going to break your heart into a million teeny-tiny pieces before this is over.
