It was said somewhere today that Hillary has made the decision to go negative on Obama simply to blunt his momentum in Iowa and elsewhere. And the stupid nature of those negative attacks, I think, as an impartial observer, benefits Obama, giving him even more momentum. I think Hillary will step back from the stupid attacks soon and just choose to win or lose Iowa based on substantive differences between her and Obama on the issues that favor her.
But the question is, where does this leave Edwards? He is in the mix, but in every poll I have seen lately in Iowa, he is in third. Many of his supporters and other observers speculate that he is sitting back and enjoying watching Hillary and Obama tear each other apart, hoping that 2004 will repeat itself. Then, the two frontrunners, Dean and Gephardt, tore each other apart, and Kerry and Edwards took advantage and won.
