I mean, come on, why can't Amanda be frigid and ladylike, like that wonderful Cokie Roberts?
Anyway, we're learning a major reinforcing message.
A Republican like George Bush can refuse to fire a dangerous incompetent like Donald Rumsfeld for years and not be criticized (much) for it by the media.
A Democrat like John Edwards hires an edgy, incisive attack-dog of a blogger for a very minor position in his campaign and the entire Washington establishment goes completely foaming-at-the-mouth over it.
Mary Matalin, snarling and nasty on TV? She's a Republican, so it's okay.
Amanda Marcotte, outraged and demonstrative in her blog? She's a Democrat, so she's a major nasty bitch.
High-larious.
Oh, well.
The lesson that I have learned here, though, is that to capitulate is to open yourself up to even more criticism. It's an admission that you have done something wrong. It makes you vulnerable.
The answer that the Edwards campaign should have given was, "We're very happy to have Amanda as part of our team. She's a very spirited advocate of the causes that she cares about and we hope to harness her energy and committee for use in our campaign."
Anyone out there in the Edwards camp listening?
And, you too. Hillary? Obama? Hello?
Thanks.
