Specifically, I believe that supporters of the occupation of Iraq must support Rep. Charles Rangel’s (D-NY) proposal for a draft. Rep. Rangel has proposed that both men and women aged 18-42 be drafted for military or civilian service. Under this program there would be no deferments.
At present, our military is at a breaking point. Tours of duty are being extended. Time at home between tours is being shortened. Soldiers whose enlistments are up are not being allowed to leave the military. Something needs to be done. The Support Our Troops/Keep Our Kids In Iraq Chorus must be called to account. You want to support our troops, then where do you stand on the draft? Put up or shut up.
Supporters of this occupation will claim that we can continue with the all-volunteer force. Don’t believe it for a moment. A small war and occupation with a small country has shown just how ridiculous a notion this is. The President and his supporters will attempt to draw the Democrats as un-patriotic. When he does this, we need to demand that he call for the draft. If the President and his supporters really want to support the troops and they don’t want to bring them home, then they must call for the draft. Let's see how macho and patriotic they are when they start drafting their constituents and their constituents' kids and grandkids. Bring Home the Troops!
