Seems to me that there might be something to this stuff about him running for president. I've been skeptical, but not so much anymore. His conversations with former Senator Boren of Oklahoma have hinted at as much, and all the Bloomberg-for-president scuttlebutt has been gathering steam. The man can certainly self-finance.
But would he do it? I don't see him pulling all that much of the vote, if he tries. Something along Perot levels, possibly better. Bloomberg's big position is that he's trying to be non-partisan, but hell, what does that mean, if anything? Plus as a speaker, he's about as exciting as oatmeal. That's not an issue for me, but it does seem to matter to voters.
I'll have to hear more about what Bloomberg actually stands for, apart from decent management of the City, before I'll consider voting for him. Right now, I don't see it. Of course, this could just be a publicity ploy, maybe to stir up interest in a gubernatorial run sometime in the future. That wouldn't surprise me. Or perhaps he's counting on a looming Senate contest for New York's junior Senate position? That seems likely, too, and if it comes to pass that that job doesn't open up soon, he'll have lost nothing by his official independent declaration.
