Cheri Yecke, Florida's K-12 Chancellor of Education, is in the news again for attempting to get completely accurate reporting about her previous statements regarding Intelligent Design Creationism removed from the web. Wesley Elsberry has the details and deconstructs Yecke using her own words.
The efficacy of science defenders like Dr. Elsberry and his associates has been nothing short of stunning. A handful of dedicated people, most of them volunteers, have managed so far to effectively shut down the flat-earthers, despite the latter being manned by an army of misled conservative fundamentalists who are in turn funded and fueled by a vast consortium of some of the wealthiest, most influential right-wing religious leaders, politicians, think-tanks, and individuals in America.
Despite these incredibly lopsided odds, for now at least, pro-science & education forces from diverse political and religious backgrounds are beating the pants off of the creationists on blogs, in print, and most especially in court. For their efforts they are sometimes subjected to the same kind of vicious attacks we here know all too well. If you support them, consider dropping by the Panda's Thumb and simply saying "Thank You" to a few of them in comments.

- Medicine Marches ... oops: Sicko opens in theaters across the nation. Michael Moore made an interesting observation on The Daily Show this week: If for profit healthcare works so dang well, surely it makes sense for property. Who needs a Fire Department? Let your homeowner's insuance company run that. Assuming your premiums are current, the firemen can call the company for authorization to put out the blaze, and, hopefully, a bean counter won't veto them with, "Let's wait and see if putting out that fire is really necessary."
- From one of my favorite blogs, Corrente, the recent evolutionary history of your adorable kitty-cat has been traced by mitochondrial DNA analysis to Silvestris lybica, native to the Middle East. Which is why it is known as the, uhh, African Wildcat?
