Think of the Democratic party holding a convention where US territories have delegates and Florida doesn't. Sounds ridiculous, because it is; yet that may very well happen if the DNC and Florida cannot stop pissing on each other.
Think of a convention where the candidates are selected by Thanksgiving. Think it cannot happen, well it may happen this year if every state keeps trying to be first.
I do not see any harm in the race to be first. I do see harm in the DNC trying to somehow decide the order. All that accomplishes is to piss people off at the DNC. The candidates are really on an equal footing in the race of the states to be first so what does it matter.
As to the candidate being selected early, so what? The pressure is then placed on the candidate to make wise decisions on where to disagree with the president. Wise, because conditions change.
If the DNC wants to remain relevant they need to figure out how to improve the party infrastructure in each state, a Dean priority. Party infrastructure is what helps win elections. Getting people on the ground organizing should be the priority. That should not be left to the candidates. A robust collection of party organizers in the 50 states will go a long way towards building Democratic majorities in both houses and electing a Democratic president.
