WASHINGTON (AP) -- A week after a deadly bridge collapse in Minneapolis, President Bush dismissed Thursday raising the federal gasoline tax to repair the nation's bridges at least until Congress changes the way it spends highway money.
''The way it seems to have worked is that each member on that (Transportation) committee gets to set his or her own priorities first,'' Bush said. ''That's not the right way to prioritize the people's money. Before we raise taxes, which could affect economic growth, I would strongly urge the Congress to examine how they set priorities.''
He's right. I am not being snarky at all. He is right.
To our credit, we have been saying that long before he was. Indeed, who was complaining about Senator Steven's precious 'Bridge to Nowhere?' We were. Because it is an obvious pork barrell project which was unnecessary considering other transportation needs in the rest of the country. And now it is more so.
Democrats are not innocent in this either. The whole of Congress engages in porkbarrell spending on insignifant and unnecessary projects so as to satisfy voters back home, and given the dire need of our infrastructure, it is a practice that must end.
We must eliminate such projects, see how much money we save, and then raise taxes if necessary to cover the balance.
And Speaker Pelosi, I blame you for allowing President Bush to say something right. You have allowed pork barrell spending to continue in this Congress. I do not care if it "this is how things are done in Congress." The nation is broke, in massive debt, spending money like there is no tomorrow. We must reign in these projects. And you have done nothing that I can see. Shame.
