First, editors at the News Journal should know that Tom Carper is not a congressman. He is a Senator. Yes, both serve in Congress, technically. But the term 'congressman' almost always refers to your Representative in the House.
But I digress.
Why must a Democrat travel the state with a Republican whose mindless support of President Bush has enabled the Iraq War to continue at the cost of hundreds if not thousands of lives?
It almost seems that Carper wants to boast up Castle, like he wants to help his old pal, his predecessor and successor, out. I agree with Jason over at Delaware Liberal. It is almost as if Carper is campaigning for Castle.
Delaware Liberal:
Tom Carper needs to stop campaigning with Mike Castle. Period. That is just basic common sense.
And it is only step one of a twelve step program I am putting Tom Carper on.
And this is not the first time Carper has done this:
The Sussex County Airport employs 1,000 people and plunks more than $150 million into the local economy each year.
Built in 1941, the airport has gone through many changes, most of them in the last 10 years as new businesses have been drawn to the county seat.
On Thursday, Aug. 23, Sen. Tom Carper and Rep. Mike Castle announced funding for the newest improvements: $4.4 million in funding to restore a runway.
Indeed, the News Journal article makes it seem that Carper and Castle attend the Bethany Beach Labor Day celebration every year together.
This must end.
If Carper wishes to continue to have Democratic support, he will stop bolstering the lone Republican in our delegation. I understand civility is the "Delaware Way" in politics. Incumbents don't attack each other, and people certainly don't run against incumbents seeking reelection, no matter how horrid their policies are, and no matter how horrible a President the incumbent supports through his actions and inaction. One of the reasons I started this blog is that the "Delaware Way" must end.
Senator Carper's supporters, who got him into every office he has ever deigned to run for, are loyal. But through his support of Castle, Senator Carper shows that he is not returning their loyalty.
Senator Carper will stop supporting Mike Castle, or he will lose the support of Democrats. And, like Jason says, this is but one thing we are going to ask him to do. He will also aggressively campaign for and support our Democratic nominee against Castle, for starters.
