My spirited defense of Gen. David Petraeus.

You probably haven't heard, but apparently -- rumor has it -- the rightwingers in this country are unhappy with the recent MoveOn.org ad which asked the question "General Petraeus or General Betrayus?"

The story has gone virtually unnoticed so far, because rightwingers have been reluctant to make too big a deal about it. Since they have often exercised their own free speech rights when offering criticism of those who serve, or have served, in the military, they're worried -- so rumor has it -- that their griping about the MoveOn ad would be unseemly. Hypocritical. And they don't want to seem like hypocrites.

So. Since they are constrained by their sense of deceny, as well as their natural shyness... let me step up to the plate and defend General David Petraeus.

I will address MoveOn.org's assault on General Petraeus thusly, and then dignify them no further:

General David Petraeus has exhibited the same commitment to the truth that former General Colin Powell -- a man highly respected man by virutally everyone -- did when he spoke to the U.N. in the run-up to the Iraq invasion of 2003.

General David Petraeus deserves no more villification than General Powell did, and asks for no more praise than Powell received, either. (To my knowledge.)

General David Petraeus showed that he has the same commitment to informing the people of the United States about the real situation in Iraq that his Commander-in-Chief, President Bush, does.

General David Petraeus would no more fix or fudge facts than any member of the current administration would, or any Republican member of Congress would.

General David Petraeus exemplified the same honor, dignity, and commitment to truth that has been the hallmark of our foreign policy over the last six years.

General David Petraeus is good, and nice. He can jog many miles. MoveOn.org isn't, and can't.
