The single most important issue people voted on was to end the war. If the election was held this November, the single biggest issue would be ending the war. All the Democratic Presidential candidates claim they want to end the war.
One thing people hate is when actions are inconsistent with rhetoric. The Democrats, before a single vote has been taken, are acting like they are going to just let the war continue.
This is their opportunity. The surge is a complete failure, so evident that even CNN criticizes those who say otherwise.
If Nancy Pelosi wants to end the war all she has to do is to prevent any bill for funding the war or the DoD be voted on unless the bill has a time line for bringing all the troops home. If she can prevent bills to impeach Bush from being brought to a vote, surely can she tighten her ass and stop bills that do not contain a time line from being voted on. Draw a line in the sand. Stand up to the school yard bully. Castrate him if you have to, but do it. Invite Sheehan to testify and ask For what noble cause did my son die for?
Hold hearings. And for God's sake in the Senate filibuster any bill that does not have a time line. Let Bush veto and turn around and pass another bill. Republicans say Democrats have no principle. Then Democrats prove them right by caving.
Pass a bill with money to bring the troops home now. Dare the president to sign it. Let the Republicans filibuster it. Point out over and over again that you are doing both the right thing and what Americans want you to do. Ask for money to support your positions. Get advertising money. Call the President a stubborn mule's ass, because that is what he is.
If you don't stand up to Bush, then Americans will not believe the Democratic party stands for anything. The party, by not standing up for what the party believes in is destroying itself.
The time for nuance is over. The surge has failed. The impotence is self evident for the world to see. The failure cannot be hidden any more than Senator Craig's motives in the men's room.
Act or be seen as hypocrites and voted out of office.
