It's my first try at this diary thing, but I'm just so angry I need to write it down.
Because I've taken pride in the fact my party could put forward both a black man and a woman as serious candidates for president. And now, it looks like Obama may lose -- because he black, as much as anything.
Yes, the Clinton folk and the right wingers will say it's because of the Rev. Wright. Who, yes, said some crazy things and some angry things. Apparently, the biggest offense is that he basically suggested 9.11 was some sort of judgment from God -- and God would damn the country for mistreating poor nations and black Americans.
But of course, the sin isn't saying the nation will be judged. I mean, I grew up as a Southern Baptist, and I was an evangelical before it was cool. I've heard God would judge us for one thing or another on more Sundays than I can count. And, right after 9.11, pastors Robertson and Falwell also said it was a judgement from God caused by gays and liberals. Did the GOP disown them?
OK, McCain did for a while. But now he courts them.
So the offensive part much be not the idea God will judge our nation -- but that he'll judge us for mistreating blacks and the poor. Basically, we're being told Obama will do too much for blacks. Not because of what he's said, but because he's black.
And yes, Wright believes some crazy conspiracy theories. But need we forget Falwell pushing videos on the Clinton murders, or Phyllis Schafley selling videos about secret messages on road signs and black U.N. helicopters. Obama has said more to disown Wright than the right has said about those crazies.
Of course, they aren't black. They don't scare white voters.
But it's not just from the right. On the left, you have Gerry Ferraro saying Obama is getting a break because he's black. Which explains why so many presidents have been black.
You have Bill Clinton praising McCain for loving America, and as better than Obama. Since Bill agrees with Obama much more on the issues, what makes it so? Must be because Obama has all those scary black views.
I mean, I used to like Bill Clinton. But playing to fear of the black man is disgusting. Period. I've heard Obama speak many times, and the idea that he hates whites and America just doesn't wash.
OK, you say, but that doesn't mean that, if Obama loses, it's because he's black. Sorry, it does.
Because if Obama was a white man, he could stand next to a crazy preacher who proclaims hate and be, well, John McCain standing next to the Rev. Hagee.
But he's black. And that means they can make us wonder if he's too black.
Sad.
