I've heard that McCain may had promised Crist the VP , but at the time , McCain was desperate and needed to win Florida badly , so he said whatever he had to say to Crist to get this important endorsement....Romney was leading by a few points in FL , but after the Crist endorsement , McCain's numbers spiked up a bit.
McCain is in a bad position here because he's probably thinking that he can beat Obama in Florida without the help of Crist , so why put him on the ticket?..Why not use the VP slot on a candidate that could help you in another important state or region?...McCain knows if he puts Christ on the ticket , he could hurt him elsewhere in the country with the exception of Florida.
What makes the matter worse is , There's been some rampant rumors about christ which only stayed local , but if Crist status goes national , those rumors will also follow him there.
Let's also not forget that Crist is not married and this would put some fuel into those rumors.
Then there is the fact that the conservatives base of the GOP have been demanding for McCain to choose a true-blue conservative but Crist is known as a moderate + when you add up the rumors and the fact he's not married , it could really be problematic.
McCain clearly owes Crist a lot and Crist clearly wants the VP slot as pay back for his Florida endorsement...If polls in Florida shows McCain still leading Obama in FL , there's no way he can put Christ on the ticket and risk alienating conservatives in other states like VA , GA , IN , OH , NV.
The media will have to report the fact that Crist is unmarried and my guess is the gay rumors would make the round on the Internet once Christ becomes a national figure.
Crist and his operatives are trying to get Crist to date many women to put those rumors to rest , but by trying too hard , it may make him look worse.
My final conclusion:
There's no doubt that if McCain picks Crist , he'd lock up Florida , but at the same time , he could open up a can of worms elsewhere.
My guess is McCain is currently leading in FL and should beat Obama in FL since the state has been trending red the past 2-3 years...The state is not a good geographical state for Obama anyway + the fact that the Obama campaign are already sending signals that they can win without FL , which really means FL would be a hard state for them.
Charlie Crist is in the same position of Janet Napolitano...If Janet was married , she'd be the number one female candidate on the field.
