The Danger Is McCain.

As Kos and others have repeatedly pointed out, Michigan Republicans have used the open primary system to screw the Dems over and over and over again through the decades. This is that rare chance, made possible by Hillary's being the only viable Dem on the ballot (she's going to win the Dem primary no matter what), for Democrats to make the Republicans pay -- and making sure Romney wins the Michigan primary is a big step towards this.

Why? Two words: John McCain.

Why is voting for Mitt in the Michigan primary a good thing? Let me count the ways:

It stifles McCain's momentum.

This is important because we don't want McCain to win the nomination. In head-to-head national matchups against Democrats done over the past year, he's BY FAR the strongest viable Republican, Rudy being toasty-toast now. In this November head-to-head, for instance, he's in a near-tie with Clinton and Obama, whereas John Edwards beats him by nine points. And if you look at the Rasmussen Key Stats page, with the most recent head-to-heads, you'll see that McCain beats Hillary 49% to 43%, edges Obama 45% to 43%, and loses to Edwards 39% to 46%. Romney, on the other hand, loses handily to Obama and Edwards (Edwards stomps Mitt 50% to 34%), but currently just barely beats Hillary, which for her is a lot better odds than the six-point margin McCain has on her.

It keeps Romney's campaign going.

This grows out of #1. We need Romney to block McCain and force McCain to spend money -- money McCain doesn't have on him to spend. This is also important because if Romney wins the nomination, Romney loses to anyone other than Mike Gravel.

Plus, we want Romney to burn off a few million more of his own money before he swirls down the political drain and cements his position in history's pantheon as "Steve Forbes with Better Hair". Put that $500 million of yours to good use for a change, Mitt!
