Over the last week or so, it seems that McCain has finally realized that the deal he made with the Devil (i.e. Karl Rove) was a contract he should have read a lot more closely. The Devil promised to fulfill his life-long dream of being president of the United States. He told McCain not to concern himself with all the minutia of the deal. Just sit back and let Ol' Scratch see to those things. After all, that's his specialty. And just like all the other stories of men who have made such deals from Faust to Jabez Stone, he learns too late that his ascension will be at the expense of other men's destruction both figuratively and literally.
I think that McCain is not sleeping very well these days. He of all people knows just what cruelties one human being can inflict upon another. I think when he sees and hears the rabid members of the crowd, he is reminded of his captors who were also fanatical followers of a dehumanizing ideology. Men who believed that there was only one path to the "Truth". And any obstacle on that path must be ruthlessly and permanently removed.
McCain is right when he says he is a student of history. And the history that is currently giving him night sweats is the history of political assassination in America. He is scared to death that he could be the catalyst for the next one. Hopefully, his turning towards the "Light" isn't too little, too late.
