I was rooting for Obama way back in 2007 when he started hinting about a possible run for the presidency. I have talked him up to both friend and foe. And I have put my money where my mouth is. I have watched people from a distance and close up gradually begin to see what I saw. Someone who could return America to its founding principles of freedom, equality, and justice for all. Someone who would drive the money-changers out of the halls of Congress. Someone who could restore America's honor in the world.
But I have also watched the inevitable (I'm sorry to say) reawakening of prejudices and hatreds that are as old as the country itself. And as Obama has surmounted every challenge that he has faced in his quest, from the unthinkable defeat of Hillary Clinton to clinch his party's nomination to his stunning rise in the polls, that little voice in the back of my mind kept whispering "remember, remember, remember".
And now with only three weeks left in this most historical election in our history, the impossible seems to have become the inevitable. Last night's debate served not only to shore up his lead, but also swing even more voters to his side. To say that I am over the moon at the prospect of this charismatic young man becoming my next president is understatement.
Yet from now until election day and beyond, I will live with that little whispering voice. And I will offer up a little prayer, "Please, God not again."
