Bill Clinton was right!

I respect and appreciate what Bill and Hillary Clinton have done during this campaign to help elect Barack Obama. If Barack has the money to retire the Clinton campaign's debts after this election then that is fine with me. Especially if we are celebrating the beginning of a new era next Wednesday.

Now to the point of my headline. There is a quote by Bill Clinton that I have heard numerous times in different settings. It essentially is this, "if we are talking about the issues then we win". Whether it be about elections, policies, or new legislation the Republican party has run out of ideas. The last time anyone from the Republican party had an idea was probably Goldwater back in 1964.

There are two things that stand out in this election for me.

During the primaries Hillary used the kitchen sink approach to attack Obama and defended it by saying the Republicans would do it in the general election so get used to it. Hillary was right too! Obama succeeded in spite of the attacks. Hillary's kitchen sink vetting process was thorough. I don't believe that the McCain campaign has found any new smears to attack him with. Having already answered all of these smears before takes much of the sting out of them now because they are not new so they are not a jolt to the public's psyche like when they were first brought up during the primary. They. Are. Old. News.

People are turning against the Republicans because they do not have any new or good ideas. All they have is their negative attacks and people have soured on them. When Elizabeth Dole attacked Kay Hagan her poll numbers went down. When Michelle Bachmann went all Joe McCarthy on Hardball her poll numbers began going down. I didn't even know who Elwyn Tinklenberg was but I donated money because of Bachmann's rantings. When Robin Hayes decided to channel Jesse Helms I sent some love to Larry Kissel. I mean who the hell was Larry Kissel to me. Every time the Repubs have attacked they have been rejected and the blogosphere came through with moral and financial support to shut them up.

So Bill was right. This campaign has been about the issues and McCain is losing. That's what I love about this election. The fervor with which the negativity of the right has been rejected. From now on if you what to play, you better have better ideas. The hate and stupidity train has left the station and the Republican party was on it.
