Mormons Tipped Scale in Ban on Gay Marriage

SACRAMENTO — Less than two weeks before Election Day, the chief strategist behind a ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage in California called an emergency meeting here.

"We’re going to lose this campaign if we don’t get more money," the strategist, Frank Schubert, recalled telling leaders of Protect Marriage, the main group behind the ban.

The campaign issued an urgent appeal, and in a matter of days, it raised more than $5 million, including a $1 million donation from Alan C. Ashton, the grandson of a former president of the Mormon Church. The money allowed the drive to intensify a sharp-elbowed advertising campaign, and support for the measure was catapulted ahead; it ultimately won with 52 percent of the vote.

In the end, Protect Marriage estimates, as much as half of the nearly $40 million raised on behalf of the measure was contributed by Mormons.

Once again an extraordinarily rich and powerful group of religious zealots has forced their will upon the voters of a state. It never fails to amaze me how disparate so-called Christian sects who 99.99% of the time loathe, denigrate, and demean each other can find common cause when it comes to the issue of equal rights for gays and lesbians. From the Roman Catholic Church with its hierarchical clergy teeming with pedophiles and closeted gays to the polygamous sacred underwear wearing Mormons, these self-named followers of Christ are as far removed from His teachings as possible.

These "people of faith" have not the slightest understanding of the message and mission of the God they purport to believe in. They are self-righteous bigots who seek to impose their deeply misguided religious beliefs upon the whole of American society. Lying and manipulation are not beneath them. They have the morality and the scruples of a slug.

We are entering a new era in America with the election of Barack Obama. Now is the time for us to strike back and put these people where they belong...within in the confines of their churches, synagogues, and tabernacles.
