Here's a link to the clip from the show.
In the clip, they get into a discussion of why minority voters seemed to overwhelmingly vote in favor of the gay marriage ban. Then it turned to a discussion on comparing the 1960s movement to the one today. D.L. argues that hits even him wrong to make that comparison.
D.L. says..
Historically, millions of people died, were disenfranchised, didn't have a name. This is about one segement ... to be married.
Which is a really good point. But I think the picture is simply bigger than that. If it were not for the fact that being gay is something that you can easily disguise, I don't think it would be a stretch of the imagination to think that you would have a history less filled with hate, death, disenfranchisement, etc.
Obviously, no one knows what would have happened, but the fact that people are still having to fight for basic equality in the 21st century is clearly something that D.L. Hughley does not grasp as fully as he would like to appear.
That's not what makes him a jerk, though. This line is what makes him a jerk:
When I read [prop 8] it asked me to make a decision I couldn't quantify on the ballot. I can't, for whatever reasons... Is it my religious upbringing? I don't condone the gay lifestyle.
I guess he's just being honest, but really, what a jerk.
