Rush to Enact a Safety Rule Obama Opposes

WASHINGTON — The Labor Department is racing to complete a new rule, strenuously opposed by President-elect Barack Obama, that would make it much harder for the government to regulate toxic substances and hazardous chemicals to which workers are exposed on the job.

Public health officials and labor unions said the rule would delay needed protections for workers, resulting in additional deaths and illnesses.

The Labor Department proposal is one of about 20 highly contentious rules the Bush administration is planning to issue in its final weeks. The rules deal with issues as diverse as abortion, auto safety and the environment.

But it is much more difficult for a new president to revoke or alter final regulations put in place by a predecessor.

One rule would allow coal companies to dump rock and dirt from mountaintop mining operations into nearby streams and valleys.

While Bush himself may be parsimonious with pardons, his underlings throughout the government are heaping benefits and boons upon countless big businesses no doubt in hopes of securing big money jobs in those same industries. It's not only unconscionable, it should also be criminal.

Racing fast to the finish, these selfish scum are ensuring a cushy future while at the same time jeopardizing not only their fellow citizens but aiding and abetting further destruction of the environment.

And as the article points out, these so-called "final regulations" can not be simply undone by the stroke of Obama's presidential pen. These dirtbags are making sure that the nullification of these odious and dangerous rules will takes years of bureaucratic process.
