"Mom, I am going to be part of History." (with poll)

I live in a small county two hours from Atlanta. I am surrounded by christian, republican red necks. I have been volunteering for the Obama campaign for the last 8 months. I homeschool my three children (thanks Bush and no child left behind). Today, instead of school we piled into the van and headed to Obama headquarters. I live in a pretty small town but the parking lot was packed and the office was full. We had already completed all our phone calls and we were at the end of door to door canvassing. We grabbed a packet and headed out. We knocked on 60 doors. Very few people were home but the ones we talked to had already voted or were on their way. My daughters enjoyed hopping out every few houses and hanging the door hangers.

As we finished up my daughter said, "Mom, you know how in school we learn about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Well, when I have kids and my kids learn about Barack Obama, I can tell them I worked on his campaign. I will be a part of history!" As I write this, I am crying. I am so proud of the campaign Barack Obama has run. I am so proud of the American people coming together to do this. And I am so proud of my family. The lessons they learned over the last few months and today will never fade. No classroom or textbook can teach what this experience did. My five year old asked me today, "Mom, how many more years until I can vote?" YES WE CAN. Go Obama!
