Once upon a time, there was a place called Camelot. Its leader inspired us to reach for our highest ideals, to aspire to great things, to literally reach for the moon.
When John Fitzgerald Kennedy was murdered, something magical in America died with him. In the forty-five years since then, our politics became meaner, our leaders, smaller. The Excalibur of sacrifice, of trust, of hope, was embedded in a stone of arrogance. JFK's corrupt and despicable enemy further entrapped the sword in chains of cynicism and corruption. Americans lost faith in their politicians and government. The "Great Communicator" who followed only encouraged that attitude, telling us that our own government, of the people, by the people and for the people, was the problem rather than the solution.
Today, the sword has been freed from the stone. America chose hope and trust over fear and slander. We chose to again believe in our government and the great experiment our Founders created. We will need that sword to face the many challenges ahead, but our President-Elect treated us like us and warned us of the many crises we face. The promise of another King came a little closer to being met today, a nation where we are judged not by the color of our skin, but the content of our character.
Today, the Round Table calls not to a chosen few, but all who are willing to step up and be counted. Today, I believe again. Yes we did. Yes we can. Yes we will.
