Since we auctioned off our house, we’ve been holed up in an apartment complex in the heart of Silicon Valley. Not an unpleasant place, we have, however, found that there is a darker element—an underground mob of squirrels that demands payola from the residents.

This lot is headed by Blogj (pronounced blog’-ee), who is particularly aggressive at shaking us down. You only have to open the door to have her show up, paws out. So, just to pay off the squirrel mob, we have to keep a bag of peanuts by the door.

Let me take you through a typical Blogj shakedown.
