I am Barry Welsh and I am the Indiana 6th District Democratic Congressional Candidate. I was the candidate in 2006 and thus far am unopposed in 2008.
The registration period for Indiana ends in 10 days on the 22nd of Feb. at noon.
Thus far, no Democratic candidates for President are on the ballot, and only Mitt Romney is registered for the Republicans. Indiana Secretary of State Election Division.
The Indiana Primary is May 6th, and both parties could have nominations sewed up by then, but then again, maybe not.
The Indiana Super Delegates are lining up behind Senator Hillary Clinton, 5-1, but what about those of us that are regular citizens? Follow me below, please.
From the Indianapolis Star.
Now let's talk about superdelegates. Indiana has 11. They include the four Democratic members of the U.S. House and Sen. Evan Bayh. Chairman Parker, state Vice Chairwoman Cordelia Lewis-Burks and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew also occupy spots on the list, as do Democratic National Committee members Phoebe Crane, Bob Pastrick and Connie Thurman.
Andre Carson would become a 12th superdelegate if he wins the March 11 special congressional election.
(I hate to bring this up, but there's also one "unpledged add-on" delegate. It's confusing, but the bottom line is this spot likely will be assigned to Democratic contributor Bren Simon.)
So, you might be asking, what makes superdelegates super? Well, they get to vote however they want. Unlike pledged delegates, who are tied to one candidate, superdelegates are free agents.
Clinton has a 5-1 edge among superdelegates who have endorsed a candidate. Bayh, Parker, Andrew, Crane and Pastrick have endorsed Clinton. Lewis-Burks, a retired union staffer, is backing Obama.
This is not a surprise with the close relationship between Senator Bayh and Senator Clinton, and the influence of Bayh on the other Democratic Party members.
The superdelegates may not be the voice of the people in Indiana in this case. The Indianapolis Star has a poll currently on the front page of it's website asking: Which candidate for president will win the Indiana Democratic primary?
The results as of this posting: 3188 responding, 64% Obama 36% Clinton.
I hope this helps to end the meme that Obama only appeals to the AA community, because it is a meme that should die. It is not true and I feel these numbers from Indiana help to show that.
Thanks for taking the time to read and thanks for all that you do for our country.
Yours in Progress
Barry Welsh
