Save The Whales: A call to action
I am Barry Welsh and I am the candidate for Congress in Indiana’s 6th District.
I was one of those people shouting "Save the Whales" from the 70’s through the 90’s. and it is time to shout that once again.
Thanks to a previous diary from Granny Doc. That diary did not get enough attention, and by her request, I have written this diary to draw attention to the issue, I have gone one step further and have a petition up and am asking for your consideration.
From Granny Doc’s Diary
The AP is continuing to monitor Australian efforts to gather evidence on Japan's commercial whaling, done under a "gimme" in the ban on international whaling treaty, signed in 1986.
For almost two weeks Greenpeace followed the factory ship, preventing the harvest, until they ran out of fuel and supplies. The Australian Customs Agency picked up the task and has released horrifying pictures of the harvest.
Australia's government on Thursday released graphic pictures of Japanese hunters harpooning whales and dragging their bleeding carcasses onto a ship near Antarctica, calling it evidence of the "indiscriminate" slaughter of the animals.
Japan denied one of the photographs showed a mother and its calf being killed, and accused Australian officials and media of spreading propaganda that could damage ties between the two nations.
The images were the latest salvo in the new Australian government's stepped-up campaign against Japan's annual whale hunt, which resumed recently after being interrupted by environmental activists who chased the fleet through icy waters at the far south of the world.
Now My petition:
We, the undersigned concerned citizens of The World, want to express our horror at the ongoing Japanese Whaling harvest.
In 1986, an international treaty was signed to eliminate the killing of the whales.
Japan has staunchly defended its annual killing of more than 1,000 whales, conducted under a clause in International Whaling Commission rules that allows whales to be hunted for scientific purposes.
If the hunt were for scientific purposes, the take would not have to be so large, and whale meat would not be showing up in high end Japanese restaurants.
We call once again upon the international community to stop all commercial whaling, and to close any exploited loop holes.
Barry Welsh
United States Congressional Candidate
Here is the link once again, and please pass this along to those that care about The Earth and it’s creatures. This is something we can all come together on during a divisive campaign season.
I will leave the petition up for one week, and do some diary reminders, and then I will send it along to the newspapers, and to the United Nations.
