My grandmother lives in Mississippi and wants to vote for someone other than McCain. She says she doesn't like McCain that much but doesn't agree with our Democratic policies. That said, my grandmother isn't stupid. She believes a Democrat will win in November, and she's intrigued by what she thinks will be sudden changes around the corner for our country. I've asked her to vote for Barack Obama in the MS primary. We had an hour-long conversation about this. I didn't convince her - she wants to learn more about him, from the candidate himself. She said she will consider voting for a Democrat in the fall, but it depends on who the Democrat is and how they run their campaign.
I can imagine a Clinton campaign. We've seen it. It'd be utterly divisive, running a mirror-image of McCain's own campaign and pretending to champion change. She would not convince my grandmother. She wouldn't convince me. My grandmother, voting like so many Americans every election cycle, would choose her opinion of the lesser of two evils. And Clinton will lose.
My grandmother's right that a Democrat will win in fall. That's unless Clinton continues the campaign of do-anything division. She is the new Huckabee - except louder, with a bigger megaphone, with the eyes and ears of the national media, and she's not idling quietly in the hopes of the vice presidency. She's ruthlessly attacking another Democrat and coasting on the final false hope of her campaign - that she can run up the margins enough to steal the election with superdelegates. It cannot happen. If it does, Democrats are giving the election to McCain.
Huckabee had no mathematical chance due to the lack of superdelegates. Clinton has the ugly poison of ambition and will do anything for a chance at the nomination, in the process splitting the party and losing November - anything, anything, anything, as long as the result is political power.
I've never seen so many people inspired, invigorated, and INFORMED about politics in our country. My friends and family, formerly uninterested, are sending ME news about Obama. Clinton cannot capture this energy. In fact, she's actively seeking to quell it.
Her hope that we'll forget?
Baseless. False.
