Senator Obama needs to go into the convention and then the subsequent national campaign looking, sounding and acting like the winner with the wind at his back and mighty "mo" at his side. He can't achieve that by playing it safe, shrinking from challenges, especially debate oportunities that may help stay the Wright debacle and controversy.
It could well be a roll of the dice. But...a debate in the aforementioned format may help Senator Obama to stave off the image that he is weak or that he is too timid to attack his opponents.
Senator Obama needs to define himself and come out swinging, not just at Senator Clinton and Senator McCain, but at the skeletons that dog him, namely the Reverend Wright, who all by himself has started to define Obama negatively in the eyes of the country, very unfairly I might add.
Senator Obama could use this "Lincoln-Douglas" style format to take on Senator Clinton and Senator McCain all at once, and to deal with the Reverend Wright in a televised debate that would draw millions and millions of viwers and potential supporters. It's what he needs to strut his stuff..to show his medal and to gain some gravitas before the eyes of the nation.
Think about it..if Senator Obama fails, would it really cause any more damage than Reverend Wright has bestowed upon him for the past few weeks and most probably into the very important weeks ahead? Is there really anything Senator Clinton could ad to the fray that would make Senator Obama look worse than he does at this very moment? I think not. Senator Obama has everything to gain and nothing to lose!
