Regardless of former Pres. Carter's failures as president, he is a former President and superdelgate. He is more respected in his later years for his work with Habitat for Humanity as well as many other humanitarian causes and has been invited by foreign governments to oversee elections. His endorsement of Obama would be a big deal, and from the tenor of his comment about Obama, one can safely assume Carter's (formal) endorsement is forthcoming. Carter's statement leaves no doubt who he supports.
This is important for several reasons. A large part of Hillary's base is comprised of older Americans and Carter surely fits into that target group. Older people can use the Carter endorsement as a segway from Clinton to support Obama and feel safe and less guilty about switching their allegiance.
It's means another important super delegate vote for Obama.
On another level,Jimmy Carter graduated 59th from the top at the Naval Academy. John McCain graduated 894th, 5th from the bottom. Jimmy Carter was a nuclear engineer and passed the "test" with Rickover, Jimmy is a smart man. John McCain... not so much, and recent events have shown that he is easily confused.
