Obama has received support from many African American voters. Hillary has received support from many women voters. The "if then" argument can be made for each of them.
There is no question in my mind that Hillary is making race an argument for democrats to nominate her. She argues that African Americans will vote for her no matter what. While Obama hasn't argued it, her strongest women supporters will vote for Obama because they do not want to see Roe vs. Wade overturned - a distinct possibility if McCain is elected.
I believe almost all of the people Hillary is arguing will support her instead of Obama in an election against McCain will support McCain which makes her argument disingenuous. I also believe that unless Hillary wins the pledged delegate count as well as the popular vote her nomination might cause many African American an young voters to either stay home or vote for a third party.
This would greatly hurt the Democratic Party in the future with both of these constituencies. Both are needed by the party to win both local as well as national elections.
